I started living with LI and YE in 2008. They hadn’t been in Mexico for very long at that point and had arrived as part of the traveling Beijing circus, finding a means to escaping it and then meeting us soon after. When they were kids their family put them up in the circus because they couldn’t support them. They grew up idealizing America and watching Michael Jackson videos. Li dreamed of a blonde girlfriend and Ye a red convertible. While they waited for their immigration papers to be processed they ran a chow mein restaurant and shared a house with us. They strongly believed in change and in the political ideals of the capital. While playing Crash Bandicoot on their Playstation they once told me that soon enough they’d have their first million. They left a few years later, one returned to China with his family and the other married a Mexican. This series of photos was the only thing left: two albums of their travels, their first impressions, a compilation of cheap hotels and tourist places and images of an ambiguous and exotic Mexico.
"Efecto dragón" was part of the annual traveling screening program, Nøche de Veranø 2018 edition "Tropical Storm" which has taken place in Chicago, Milwaukee, NYC, LA and Mexico City.
